Forbidden maneuver violations: minimum camera count

The minimum required number of video cameras depends on the intersection configuration (number of traffic directions, number of lanes in each direction, spacing between lanes, and the availability of mounting structures), as well as on the technical specifications of the video cameras.

One camera is enough to ensure basic operation of the Software for detecting “Road signage” violations on short road segments.

To ensure basic operation of the Software for detecting “Forbidden maneuver” violations, it is sufficient to install two video cameras per controlled direction (entry and exit). It is permissible to combine multiple functions within a single video camera. Such combination is allowed provided that the intersection configuration enables installation of the camera in compliance with the requirements for placement, field of view, and technical characteristics applicable simultaneously to multiple camera types.

To minimize occlusion within the camera field of view, it is recommended to use one LPR camera per two traffic lanes in each direction for monitoring entry to and exit from the intersection.

The use of additional video cameras is recommended when an additional observation angle is required and to enhance the evidentiary base when generating evidence materials. One OV camera is recommended for each controlled entry and exit.

Therefore, if it is necessary to monitor all traffic directions at an intersection of two roads (with two lanes in each direction), and it is not possible to combine the functions within a single camera (i.e., the camera’s field of view and technical characteristics do not allow simultaneous monitoring of entry and exit line crossings or simultaneous monitoring of traffic light signals and entry/exit line crossings), then install 8 LPR cameras (Figure 5) and 8 OV cameras (Figure 6).
