Scale instance

To scale an IREX instance by the camera or user number, or archive depth, configure new machines for the Secure Cloud. The Smart City shell does not require manual scaling, since it automatically takes as many resources as needed from the new machines.

Scaling factor New machine roles
Cameras Kubernetes machines
Ceph monitor, hot and warm machines
Archive depth Ceph monitor, hot and warm machines
Users Balancer machines

Install the hardware

  1. Make sure the hardware requirements are met.
  2. Install servers and network equipment.
  3. Turn on the equipment.
  4. Configure IPMI/ILO/IDRAC (and etc) interface for the local network.

Deploy operating systems and network

  1. Add the new server to MAAS server and select machine roles.
  2. Install Ubuntu server with root-level access.
  3. Configure network interfaces.
  4. Configure ssh/VPN access to the server.
  5. Setup server domain names in the private network (recommended).

Deploy the secure cloud

  1. Get cluster config and inventory ready:
  2. Define cluster name; include all necessary *.yaml to config (monitoring/logging/DNS, etc.).
Add user and keys for deployment
Enter the paths to the certificate files
Add required repositories to the machine source list.
Fill in the DNS section required for the Secure Cloud console - web interface for fast cluster components configuration (number of databases, service replicas, etc.; optional for clusters)
Fill in the network section: define the subnet for the machine and IP address for namespace balancer
    Define mandatory namespaces and services
Fill in the registry and other necessary sections.

  3. Install the "virtualenv" virtual environment - a tool to create isolated Python environments. It creates a folder that contains all the necessary executables to use the packages that a Python project would need. It is required on a bare-metal server for the first Secure Cloud installation.
  4. After the cluster config is ready, deploy Secure Cloud using the deployment script that includes all necessary services:
  5. Kubernetes
    Ceph
    Cassandra
    Postgres
    Kafka
    Others

  6. Add DNS names.
